Over the next few days we will be highlighting 8 FCCLA projects that have qualified and will be competing at state April 4th-6th. Our third project is by Lainee Leathers and Bay Ellis. Lainee Leathers, FCCLA Vice President, and Bay Ellis, FCCLA Secretary, finalized their FCCLA ‘Star Event’ project this week. The initiative was titled ‘First Aid for Freshmen. The project was based on teaching First Aid and CPR to Springfield High School freshmen. Lainee and Bay first raised money through a breakfast burrito sale, to pay for the cost of the class materials. With the help of the Springfield EMS group, Springfield FCCLA, and the volunteers who contributed to the burrito sale, the freshmen students acquired the skills, knowledge and importance of CPR and First Aid in the ‘Living On Your Own’ class.

Over the next few days we will be highlighting 8 FCCLA projects that have qualified and will be competing at state April 4th-6th. Our first project is from FCCLA Co-President Aliya Cohoon and Karina Garcia, Vice President. They have created a project titled ‘We Read, You Read, I Read’. This project ensured that K-5 children have a better chance of obtaining reading material. Implementing all three learning styles into class time includes kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learning. We are both very passionate about children, making this project so important to us. The two seniors are very thankful for a good working relationship with the elementary teachers. The teachers allowed the two of them to be involved in their classrooms.

Springfield High School Senior, Lainee Leathers, was awarded the CCGS Ruby Miller Scholarship. The CCGS Ruby Miller Scholarship was established in order to recognize one or more outstanding athletes who are graduating seniors and who plan to go into coaching. The award also honors Dr. Ruby Miller, one of the most respected coaches in the history of Colorado girls’ interscholastic sports. Ruby Miller was a teacher/coach for 34 years. She is quoted as saying: “I really only had one goal—to help young women become better individuals; and I thought I could do that best through coaching.” Congratulations Lainee!

Congratulations to senior, Aliya Cohoon for being selected as a Daniels Scholar! Daniels Scholars are selected because they embody the criteria Bill Daniels defined for the program: strength of character, leadership potential, commitment to serving their communities, academic performance or promise, well-rounded personality and emotional maturity and stability. Bill Daniels would also want his scholars to uphold the values that meant so much to him. Those values include ethics and integrity, honesty, respect for people, loyalty and reliability, entrepreneurial spirit, patriotism and dedication to community, commitment to excellence, and etiquette. The Daniels Scholarship covers the full cost of attendance to a one of their partner schools. Great job Aliya!

Starting in January the 5th grade began a curriculum called Ameritowne. Ameritowne is a project-based curriculum that teaches students about financial literacy. Students learned about banking, checking, marketing, free market enterprise, and government. They interviewed for jobs and were tasked with filling out job applications and creating resumes! The height of the experience was a 3.5 hour day where students were able to participate as citizens of Ameritowne and utilize the skills they learned in class. We would like to thank the following sponsors who contributed to this experience: Colorado Bank & Trust Company - La Junta, La Junta Chamber of Commerce, INBank-Wiley & Lamar, Peoples Credit Union-Springfield, Randall Roberson Agency (Farmers Insurance) -La Junta, Southeast Business Retention Expansion & Attraction (SEBREA), SE Colorado Power Association-La Junta, Three Corners Connector (Grid United) - Houston, TX https://youtu.be/qceNkvEVTUE
